INVENTION FILM CAMP brings new and aspiring filmmakers together with established directors, filmmakers, and artists for 7 days of creative collaboration on beautiful Cortes Island. Participants will learn technical skills, produce powerful short films, and build friendships with peers and artist mentors.

INVENTION is fast-paced, engaging, and fun. Throughout the week, you will work in small groups to produce short films about a social or environmental issue that you are passionate about.  An artist-mentor team supports each group, sharing their knowledge and experience in filmmaking, creative writing, theater, and music production.

In the evenings, you will attend presentations by professional filmmakers, providing you with opportunities to dive deeper, and discover what it takes to bring your filmmaking career to the next level.

In addition to being part of a filmmaking team, you will also have a 'family group' which will meet for daily check-ins, and will support you to have the best experience possible.

The films produced in the camp will be distributed through Reel Youth's website, and will be curated into a film festival screening package. Following INVENTION, Reel Youth will support you with hosting a screening of the camp's films in your home community.

This camp is an incredible opportunity for new and emerging filmmakers to have fun, gain skills, and explore new ways to create social change using film. This new network of filmmakers and mentors will support future projects, and will help open doors within the BC arts community.

The INVENTION FILM CAMP is for inspired filmmakers who are between the ages of 15-24.  We are looking for a diverse set of people who have some previous filmmaking experience and would like to take their skills to the next level.

This is an inclusive program and is open to all identities. We encourage Indigenous, non-Indigenous, immigrant, newcomer, refugee, people of colour, queer, two-spirit, trans, and gender creative youth to apply.

Please sign-up soon as space is limited! Applicants will be notified by May 7th if they have been selected to participate.

The camp is taking place at Hollyhock on Cortes Island, in the traditional territory of the Klahoose, Sliammon, and Homalco people. Hollyhock's waterfront site is a spectacular natural setting for learning. You can explore an interactive map of Hollyhock here.

A charter bus will pick youth up from the Departure Bay Ferry Terminal in Nanaimo and will bring them to Hollyhock on Cortes Island.

PLEASE NOTE: You are responsible for getting to the Departure Bay Ferry Terminal in Nanaimo in time to meet the bus on the morning of July 13th. A detailed travel schedule will be emailed to you when we confirm your acceptance to the INVENTION FILM CAMP.

All participants will be staying at Hollyhock in a mix of camping and shared dorm rooms. Everyone will have access to a full-service bath house with toilets, showers, and hot running water.

Delicious meals and snacks will be provided, and will include fresh ingredients from Hollyhock's beautiful garden. Meals will be mostly vegetarian with meat options available on two of the nights.

The tuition for the camp is $250 CDN.

Tuition includes transportation to, and from, the Departure Bay Ferry Terminal in Nanaimo, accommodation, and meals (including dinner on arrival day and a packed lunch on departure day).

Partial scholarships are available for those who would not otherwise be able to attend the camp. Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need.
