Reel Youth was so happy to be welcomed into the community of Fort Liard this spooky season to make scary movies with the amazing youth of the community! These energetic, fun and creative young filmmakers brought their original ideas to life with a keen eye for film and a whole lot of laughter. Watch if you dare! 🎃

In week one, the Community Hall became our film studio for a 4-day after-school workshop. Youth learned the arc of a scare, framing, continuity and filmmaking 101 to co-create their own scary shorts, including “The Janitor,” starring Stevie Nande and the youth of Fort Liard! In week two, high school students at Echo Dene School dove deeper, adding colour grading, sound effects and graphics to create scary films made entirely by them.

This is the first of three years of programs in Fort Liard, each building on the last to grow skills and capacity for the community’s emerging filmmakers.

Mahsi Cho to the Government of the Northwest Territories, the Hamlet of Fort Liard, Acho Dene Koe First Nation, Echo Dene School and the whole Acho Dene Kue community for welcoming us with such warmth. We’re honoured to keep building great relationships with you!

These films were made in Echaot’l Koe (Fort Liard), on the traditional territory of the Acho Dene Koe First Nation. We also recognize the Métis community of Fort Liard. Reel Youth is deeply grateful to have been welcomed onto these lands, and we honour the Dene people who have cared for them since time immemorial. Mahsi Cho.

In our work we strive to embody what we hope to see in the world—a just humanity and community in which people are free to be themselves fully and without fear. A community where no one is exiled or silenced because of gender, gender expression, race, color, ethnic or national origin, religion, sexual/affectional orientation, age, class, physical character or disability. We believe in the power of storytelling to make connections across difference.
