About the Program

ROOTED VOICES is a fast-paced, online filmmaking program designed for Youth Leadership Millennium participants to create short video poems and films that explore themes of reconciliation, inclusivity, environmental responsibility, and wellbeing.

Participants engage with Indigenous perspectives through poetry, storytelling, and discussion, while learning how to approach complex topics with curiosity, humility, and respect.

No previous filmmaking experience is required.

You will:

  • Learn the basics of storytelling, slam poetry, and visual expression
  • Plan, shoot, and edit your own short film
  • Explore reconciliation, inclusion, and responsibility through creative reflection
  • Learn about Indigenous histories and present-day realities connected to the places and themes you choose
  • Build confidence, creative skills, and digital media literacy
  • Receive free editing software you can use on your phone, tablet, or computer
  • Be supported by experienced Reel Youth facilitators throughout the process
  • Have a good time doing it!

At the end of the program, students’ films will be celebrated at a virtual premiere and shared through Reel Youth platforms, including TELUS Optik TV, STORYHIVE, and Reel Youth's YouTube channels, as well as on the Reel Youth website.

In our work we strive to embody what we hope to see in the world—a just humanity and community in which people are free to be themselves fully and without fear. A community where no one is exiled or silenced because of gender, gender expression, race, color, ethnic or national origin, religion, sexual/affectional orientation, age, class, physical character or disability. We believe in the power of storytelling to make connections across difference.
